“This is how we take the old to the new!“ This quote from an old Nice & Smooth song is what best describes DJ SoulClap’s production. Born in Braunschweig, Germany and embedded in the Hip Hop culture since the late 90’s he has been making his way from creating mixtapes for his friends to producing songs for the whole world to hear. SoulClap started DJ’ing in 2001. When he saw Masta Ace and Edo.G on stage in 2004, he decided to dive deeper into the music. “I had a good friend who had been making music for years with his group called Soultecniques. He showed me how to make beats with Cool Edit and Fruity Loops, I’m still sticking to these programs till today.”
DJ SoulClap made his first international contacts on mastaace.com. His first productions were songs for B.L.O from the Bronx and Lex from Queens. With the time passing by he made a lot of contacts on myspace and released his first Promo EP in the end of 2007. It featured artists such as Superstar Quamallah, Tony Tigerstyle, Brown Co., Bru Lei, Stranger Day and Shaoo Zulu. After getting a lot of good feedback from all around the world he quickly put out the follower, which was a remix of Jay-Z’s American Gangster album. He remixed the whole album on one weekend to be one of the first to put it out, followed by more than 100 other producers who also remixed it. It was featured on blogs and websites all over the internet and two of the tracks got honored by being featured on each of Kevin Nottingham’s “American Gangster: Best of the Remixes” albums on kevinnottingham.com.
In 2008 his long time partner and other half of the Soul Occs, Tony Tigerstyle came to Germany for two months to record songs for their album called “Soul Brothers”. They did a song with Punchline of eMC that is called “Dedicated to the B’s” which had over 2000 downloads. They also opened up for eMC in Kiel and became the talk of the town afterwards. All of the Soul Occs’ shows had crowds around 300 people who were partying with the duo as if they were already known for years.
In 2009 SoulClap had his first official international placement on Superstar Quamallah’s critically acclaimed album called “Invisible Man” with the song “Purity”. The album was on place 10 of the top sellers of UGHH.com, even before albums by Raekwon, J Dilla and KRS-One & Buckshot. In the summer of ’09 he produced a song for Masta Ace & Edo.G, which was supposed to be on “Arts & Entertainment”, but it was kicked off last second to be on their follow up EP called “Extra Entertainment”. The song, which is called “Authentic” caused many people to draw comparisons to DJ Premier. “When I met Blaq Poet in early 2010 and played some beats for him, he called me the white Premo. I’m not trying to sound like him. I always do what the sample is asking me for. If the sample wants to be chopped in a certain way, I do it, if it sounds like Premo in the end, that’s just how it had to be. But I also make beats without samples, where I use instruments and synths.”
